What We Believe

GOD is the creator and sustainer of the universe, the Lord of history and the source of power, goodness and truth in our lives. God’s nature and will are Love; God not only loves each person, but actively seeks to draw each of us into a forgiving, renewing, and eternal relationship. To this end, God has revealed Himself in Jesus, whom we call “the Christ” in our acceptance of his sovereignty in our lives. The “Holy Spirit” is the continuing presence of Christ in our midst, binding us together in love and leading us forth in servanthood as people empowered by God’s will.

The Bible is our witness to God’s revelation and saving action in human history. The Spirit which inspired those who wrote it also inspires those who read it in earnest faith. With John Wesley, United Methodists affirm that both narrow literalism and irresponsible interpretation can be avoided by the use of human reason, the tradition of the church, and the experience of the Holy Spirit in the community of believers.

Those who believe are justified by faith, sanctified (made mature in faith) by obedience to God’s will, and are “going on to perfection,” which is the quality of Christlike love that can keep us from knowingly violating God’s will or consciously separating ourselves from God’s love. These attributes stimulate us to be partners with Christ in building the kingdom of God on earth, as it is in heaven.
